Austin Center for Photography is a proud sponsor of the Icons of Photography Lecture Series bringing to Austin four world renowned photographers a year and cementing Austin's place as a cultural focal point for fine photography.

The Icons of Photography 2009 Lecture Series brought world acclaim to Austin and ACP when Mary Ellen Mark, Alec Soth, Elliott Erwitt, and Lauren Greenfield spoke and showed their work to full houses at the Blanton Museum of Art Auditorium.

We have just hosted our first two Icons of Photography of 2010, David Alan Harvey and Abelardo Morell. Harvey also conducted one of his famous workshops in March -- a first for Austin. Laura Letinsky is booked for a September presentation and Bruce Davidson is visiting in October. The 2011 Icons of Photography will be announced as soon as the arrangements are confirmed.

Friday, May 28, 7pm - An Evening with Abelardo Morell

The Icons of Photography No.6 lecture series brings Abelardo Morell to Austin. Once again to be held in the Blanton Museum of Art Auditorium.

Abelardo Morell sees more clearly and more deeply than most artists of his generation because he realizes that the surface of the visible world is merely the start of the processes of observation and introspection. His complex photography may begin with both tools of earlier centuries and technologies from throughout the history of the medium, but his vision is fully modern and works to both build upon and challenge the present parameters of the art.

Morell's photographs have been collected and shown in many galleries and museums. His works can be found in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Some of his many publications include A Camera in a Room (1995), A Book on Books (2002), Camera Obscura (2004), and his retrospective compilation, Abelardo Morell (2005).

Since then, David has shot over forty essays for National Geographic Magazine and his work has appeared in many magazines, anthologies, and exhibitions. He has published two major books, Cuba and Divided Soul, both based on his extensive work of the Spanish cultural migration into the Americas.

His latest book Living Proof documents David's intense journey into the world of hip-hop culture. David joined Magnum Photos in 1993. He currently lives in New York. In the winter of 2008, David and a committed group of photographers launched Burn Magazine as a new online photographic journal for emerging photographers. View the journal here.

The Photographic Essay, A Workshop with David Alan Harvey

As one of the most buzzed about cities in America, Austin offers a diverse array of opportunities to explore your photographic potential. At no time is the buzz thicker than during SXSW, the world-renowned music festival showcasing nearly 2,000 bands from around the globe. Beyond SXSW and the city's rich musical heritage, you can explore themes involving pristine natural resources, booming urban development, cultural diversity, a vibrant arts scene, the historical downtown, the state's government seat, and the list goes on.

These are just a few starter ideas but this workshop is less about Austin and more about you. We are very excited to bring you this incredible opportunity to discover and pursue your photographic authorship alongside one of the world's premier photography instructors, Magnum Photos' Minister of Education, David Alan Harvey.
